Context

A prophecy from a dark time for Judah and Israel, after Assyria had overrun the northern territories of Zebulun and Naphtali (9:1). Isaiah announces a light dawning on people walking in darkness and the birth of a royal child from David's line, whose reign of justice will never end (9:7). Christians read it as a prophecy of Jesus; it is a familiar Christmas reading, set to music in Handel's Messiah.
